Juventus boss Massimiliano Allegri expressed his satisfaction at his side’s win over Fiorentina but maintains the bianconeri have to keep pushing forward.
In his post-match interview with Mediaset Premium, the former Milan boss was asked what he would use as a headline to send a message to Inter. Allegri told reporters,:
“I don’t know. I’m not capable of being a journalist. We’re going through a nice run of form. Now we have the derby and a game against Carpi. We have to keep winning to maintain our position. To make a comeback you need continuity, we are still behind and need to close to gap. It also depends on the other teams as well. We are playing well but there’s room for improvement. We have been solid because everyone works together in the defensive zone. Making a comeback in six games is never easy, especially in Italy.”
Now, you guys are playing catch up to Inter.
“We’ll see. They aren’t in first by accident, they were built to win and have a manager who is used to winning. They can close the first round of games on 45 points. We had to overtake Milan and then Roma. Now we have Napoli and Fiorentina ahead of us and we hope to pass them.”
Mandzukic scored right before you were going to take him off.
“Football is all about moments. Mandzukic is an player of international standard and scores important goals. Morata was coming in, but he scored a nice goal. In life, you need a bit of luck.”
Throughout the game you guys sat deep and picked your moment to increase the intensity. Was this how you prepared the game?
“Fiorentina had a good first half, and played with a lot of intensity. I saw that already from the first half their intensity could drop especially considering their pressing from the top. They never took a shot but there was balance. We could have pressed them high or limited Ilicic and Borja Valero between the lines. In the first half, we struggled with Marchisio, then their intensity dropped and we did good.”
Pogba was booed today. What do you say to that?
“He had a very good game and only had a few misplaced passes. When everything seems easy, he tries to do useless plays. Then, however, he does the simple things and expresses his immense quality. In the end, he did good but could improve in certain respects.”
Did you ever think of changing formation tonight?
“The team need to be aware of their strengths and their defensive solidity. Games last 100 minutes and drops of intensity are normal. Whoever came into the lineup did good. I thought of other things than changing formations. Today, I would have had to play Barzagli at right back if I wanted to use a back four. We had offensive wing-backs with Mandzukic who gets on the end of crosses nicely.”
