Atalanta captain Papu Gomez spoke about La Dea’s elimination from the Europa League.
Atalanta came incredibly close to eliminating Dortmund from the Europa League last night as after leading the Germans on away goals with the aggregate score at 3-3, they conceded a goal in the 83rd minute and subsequently went out 4-3 on aggregate.
Captain Papu Gomez commented on how close his side came to progressing through into the Round of 16 in a post-match interview with Sky Sport Italia, and was rather emotional when speaking.
“There’s bitterness, sadness, because we really cared about continuing in the Europa League. We came very close and were so unlucky in the draws to come up against very strong sides, but played really well and were so close, sometimes the ball goes in, sometimes it doesn’t, but we still put in two great performances against one of the best clubs in Europe.”
Gomez then proceeded to thank the fans for their commitment to the Nerazzurri as Atalanta’s home games in the Europa League were played at Sassuolo’s Mapei Stadium in Reggio-Emilia because the Orobici’s home stadium, the Stadio Azzurri d’Italia in Bergamo, was unable to comply with UEFA standards.
“We leave the tournament with heads held high. I compliment and thank all the fans, who after a day of work travel two hours by train or bus to come and see us. Now we’ll try to get into the Europa League again for next season.”
