Fiorentina and Argentina legend Gabriel Batistuta believes that Diego Maradona is superior to Lionel Messi.
Messi is widely regarded as one of the greatest footballers of all time and the five time Ballon D’Or winner is arguably the world’s best player ahead of Real Madrid’s Cristiano Ronaldo.
Barcelona and Argentina’s Messi has been compared with Pelé and his fellow retired countryman Diego Maradona.
Since Messi emerged on the scene La Pulga was seen as Maradona’s heir and El Diego himself said “I’ve seen the player who will inherit my place in Argentinian football and his name is Messi”. Maradona was quoted saying that in 2006 when Messi was just an 18 year-old.
Messi is Argentina’s Captain and recently overtook Batistuta to become the all-time goal scorer of La Albiceleste but Batistuta, who was nicknamed Batigol due to his prolific goalscoring, doesn’t believe that Messi is the greatest Argentinian to play football.
Batigol spoke with Corriere della Sport.
“Diego was the best ever. He represented Argentinians in many things, not just football. He has charisma, talent and rare invention.
“Messi, even if he’s technically as good,or maybe even better, can’t surpass him. Lionel doesn’t have Maradona’s charisma.
“Diego could command a stadium, everyone watched him. I played with him, and I can tell you how technically decisive he was for the team.
“Maradona is poetry, Messi is prose.
“What Messi lacks compared to Maradona is this fantastic, almost dreamlike dimension. Even if he trains every hour of the day he can’t reach that state, because it’s not something that is only down to him.
“There were doubts about Messi in the past, in one way or another, but now there’s no longer a debate. Technically, he’s perfect; he’s scored more goals than anyone.
“But for me he’s not Diego, and he probably never will be”.
