Gianluigi Buffon is open to an Italy return if he receives a call-up from Caretaker Manager Luigi Di Biagio.
After Italy failed to qualify for the 2018 FIFA World Cup, captain Gianluigi Buffon announced his retirement from the National Team after a 20 year career, but Luigi Di Biagio stated that he will most likely ask the Juventus legend to return for the next round of friendlies for the Azzurri.
In an interview with Tiki Taka, Buffon expressed his opinion on the subject.
“There’s the sense of responsibility and attachment I feel I can give to the national team, even in this moment of transition, in a cycle of friendlies, games which will definitely be delicate. I definitely thought I’d be going on holiday with the family for a few days, but I think when the national team has a need it’s right to respond and not desert, aware that from June there will be other types of discourse.
Those who are going and playing their first games don’t have ones they can face with utmost serenity, because straight away they face Messi and co and then they face England at Wembley. If there’s maybe even one experienced player who can give a word of advice, or say something comforting, or make their own experience available I think they can do well straight away.”
