A touching story coming has emerged almost a week after Davide Astori’s funeral in Florence.
Last Wednesday, Juventus beat Tottenham 2-1 at Wembley Stadium to advance to the UEFA Champions League quarterfinals in stunning fashion. Immediately after the win, even as most of the team was celebrating, Gianluigi Buffon was organizing his and a small delegation’s return to Italy to attend Astori’s funeral.
According to La Nazione and Gazzetta dello Sport, Buffon entered the Juventus locker room shortly after the final whistle whilst his teammates were celebrating and made an announcement.
“Tomorrow is Astori’s funeral service. There’s a private plane that will take us to Florence. Whoever wants to come will meet in the hotel lobby, we’re leaving at 4:30 in the morning. I know and understand those who want to sleep in after a game like tonight’s.”
The team returned to the hotel and went to sleep for the evening. A few hours later, Buffon emerged to the lobby to a shocking surprise.
It wasn’t just a small delegation – but almost the entire Juventus team that had traveled to London.
The problem was, Buffon and Allegri had not expected such a crowd and the jet was only big enough for 12 passengers. In the end, only Allegri and his assistant Landucci, Buffon, Chiellini, Benatia, Pjanic, Barzagli, Marchisio and Rugani were the only ones on board.
The delegation arrived at the Santa Croce cathedral to a raucous reception, being greeted with cheers, flowers and an ovation from an otherwise hostile crowd.
