The damage from yesterday’s tough Champions League loss is mounting for Napoli. Paolo Cannavaro’s agent was critical of the squad after their 3-1 loss at Borussia Dortmund. Enrico Fedele stated Napoli has only one true top player in goalkeeper Pepe Reina who came to the Partenopei in a season-long loan deal from Liverpool. Fedele believes Reina is the only player who is making a true difference at the club. He elaborated on the team’s struggles citing a lack of communication between its players being the root of much of the club’s current struggles. Napoli has now lost three straight games in all competitions and looks to be all but eliminated from advancing in the Champions League.
Fedele wasn’t ready to shut the door on the wayward captain’s time with his hometown club but added, “One thing is certain, Benitez doesn’t think he fits in with his system.” Cannavaro and his older brother Fabio both came up through Napoli’s youth system. Paolo made two appearances with the senior club before being sold to Parma. Aurelio De Laurentis brought Cannavaro back at the start of the 2006 campaign in order to help the club win promotion to Serie A. Since that time he has never made less than 34 league appearances until this year where he has only played in four of 13 league matches and has yet to make an appearance in the Champions League.
For his part, Cannavaro has never criticized his coach or lamented his lack of playing time. All reports are the club captain has been exemplary in training and worked hard to regain a spot in the starting 11. There are rumblings former coach Walter Mazzari is considering a reunion with Cannavaro at Inter.
