The Swiss national team won their first opening match at the European Championship in their history.

The Albanians made their major tournament debut, but a glaring mistake from Lazio goalkeeper Etrit Berisha in the end cost them a point.

A more experienced and mature Switzerland side eventually prevailed, in the end, most of their players partake in elite European competitions such as Lichtsteiner, Sommer, Rodriguez, Xhaka and more, while on the other side of the equation, Albanian’s international experience is very limited. One standout on the Albania side was Elseid Hysaj, the Napoli fullback who dispatched an excellent performance tonight is one of the few Albanians who has played in continental competition.

Genoa’s Blerim Dzemaili put in a true workman’s performance tonight, completing 88% of his passes and nearly scoring off a free kick when he hit the post. Again, another experienced player in European competition for Switzerland who has played for both Napoli and Galatasaray over the years.

A full three points for the Alpine side, and only their second ever win in the European Championships. An industrial side like Switzerland may cause problems down the line.

While for Albania, it’s back to the drawing board. Several botched chances to level the scoring and gift them a point may come back to haunt them if they lose the next game to Albania in four days time.
