Italy’s defence is yet to be beaten so far in EURO 2016 and, arguably, the leading factor to that stat is Giorgio Chiellini, who spoke to Sky Sports After Italy defeated Sweden 1-0 to qualify for the round of 16.
“Zaza and Eder made a great play with their individual qualities, Simone [Zaza] has this physical arrogance going into balls believing he’s going to beat whoever it is that’s trying to challenge him for possession. In training, Eder has been hot these past few days, I’m happy he’s found his moment of glory after such hard work”
Chiellini then spoke about the backlash Eder has gotten for not being technically Italian,
“Italians always give these players a hard time, but in reality, they’re the guys that give their all because they know they have negative eyes on them.”
The defender was then asked about his duel with Zlatan Ibrahimovic. “Ibra? It’s natural to create this sort of player-to-player rivalry. It’s what makes us play stronger. It gets us going. The truth is that he’s a great striker and probably the most complete striker who’s ever played in Italy. With how physical he is, you’ve got to try to limit him to as little as possible, and we did well in that respect.”
Chiellini concluded with, “In football, there’s always luck to be found, and it’s a very important component to the game.”
