There was excitement and disappointment among several Italian players this evening as Prandelli revealed his preliminary team list to go to Brazil. However, one player who will not be celebrating tonight is Zenit defender Domenico Criscito. In an exclusive interview to TuttoMercatoWeb, the Italian defender revealed his disappointment of missing out on a place on the plane to Brazil this June. “I did not expect it, this is a real blow to me because I was in the group up until the last moment”, explained Criscito, before answering more questions about his reaction and feelings towards being left out of the finals.
Do you think playing in Russia has affected you?
“I do not think so. I played in a squad that reached the knockout stages of the Champions League, and when you achieve certain things it is not without reason.”
Did you hear from Prandelli?
“No, I learned it all from the television. It is a blow. It is even worse than two years ago. At least two years ago there was a reason for excluding me. But now?”
Will you confront the coach?
“Prandelli has to make choices, I did the best I could and I don’t need to speak to anyone about it.”
Domenico Criscito missed out on the Euros in Ukraine and Poland two years ago after allegations of match fixing. Prandelli who had initially called the player for the tournament in 2012 decided to drop the left back after fears that he would be under too much pressure with uncertainty surrounding the match fixing trials. The former Juventus and Genoa defender has 22 caps for the Italy team, last playing for his country in March during their 1-0 defeat to Spain in a friendly.
