Former Juventus captain Alessandro Del Piero has expressed his nostalgia for a romantic football that sadly does not exist anymore.
The 38-year-old, who represents an authentic legend for the Bianconeri having defended their colors for 19 years, believes that today’s football is in high need for more players like Paolo Maldini and Francesco Totti, who based their careers on an unquestioned loyalty to their teams.
“Sadly, I believe that today it is extremely hard to find cases of pure loyalty in the world of football like mine or the one of Totti,” said Del Piero to the radio show Rtl 102.5.
“For the future, I strongly hope that more teams like Juventus, Roma, and even Milan, who also had many symbols like Franco Baresi, will be able to experience similar stories of loyalty in order to make football much more romantic.”
The current Serie A is living the last pure cases of football loyalty with, besides the already mentioned Totti, Daniele De Rossi at Roma, Daniele Conti at Cagliari, Javier Zanetti at Inter, Gianluigi Buffon at Juventus, not to mention his teammate Claudio Marchisio, who is on his way to become another Bianconeri flag. Very few names, considered that, 20 years ago, only AC Milan had more with Alessandro Costacurta, Mauro Tassotti, Alberigo Evani, and of course Maldini and Baresi.
