Inter beat an impressive Southampton side due to a great defensive performance and a single goal from winger Antonio Candreva to obtain their first points in the 2016/17 Europa League.

Here is how we rated Inter players’ performances.

Handanovic (7.5): A clean sheet in the Europa League after Inter’s first two miserable games was absolutely needed, and Handanovic saw that no shots go by him today. Some of the saves this man makes are truly mind numbing.

Nagatomo (7): The Japanese fullback was clean and collected on the ball and had two goal line saves to keep the clean sheet. Was substituted in the 91st minute for D’Ambrosio to time waste.

Miranda (7): Great all around performance from the Brazilian. On days like today, he’s a joy to watch at the back.

Murillo (5.5): A bit restless when Southampton got forward, which was often. Shaky all around performance but Miranda seemed to keep him in the game.

Santon (7): His knee problems seem to have gone and with it have come some truly impressive performances form the Italian fullback. Wonderfully made himself space and crossed in a low ball that would be clinically converted by Candreva.

Brozovic (5): The Croatian midfielder saw his first minutes since the end of August and was rather lively and unpredictable at times. Unfortunately, after a very harsh challenge, Brozovic was red-carded later in the second half of the match.

Medel (6): Retrieved the ball today and dispersed of it cleanly. Did his part in the central of the park and you could not ask for more.

Gnoukouri (5.5): The young Ivorian was slow and clumsy at times but his passing often calmed the Inter midfield down to control things.

Candreva (6.5): Arguably Inter’s least involved player up until his goal in which he connected when Santon drove in a low cross and Candreva fired home a lovely left-footed shot right under the crossbar for his first goal as an Interista. Came off for Ansaldi in the 81st minute to tack on defensive prowess.

Icardi (6): The Inter captain did not score but was involved in almost every Inter attack. Overall a much better performance than his game against Cagliari at the weekend.

Eder (6.5): The Brazilian-born Italian was unquestionable in his efforts. The man was simply everywhere tonight in the final third. Came out with Cramps for Perisic in the 86th minute.

Ansaldi (N/A): Came on to close out the clean sheet and did.

D’Ambrosio (N/A): Came on to waste time as well as provide a much needed burst of speed if needed.

Perisic (N/A): Was brought on to keep the Southampton defense on its toes and from pressing their defense higher up the pitch.
