FIGC Commissioner Roberto Fabbricini refused to rule out a move for Antonio Conte as the next Italy head coach.
Fabbricini finds himself in truly an incredible position. He wasn’t even on the ballot to become the next leader of the Italian FA, yet here he is narrowing down a list of potential coaches for Italy’s biggest job.
“Is Conte an option? His club confirmed their position, he has a contract that lasts 18 more months, we’re very alert but anything is possible.
“Then come also the discussions with people we are truly interested in. Every coach has in their hearts the Azzurri, but they are professionals and have issues to deal with so we will have to see.
“Di Biagio is the coach who will manage the two friendlies, after that [vice-director] Costacurta has not yet made further inquiries.
“Diplomacy is needed and to avoid creating diplomatic problems. Men who are under contract – even those abroad need to be left alone.”
Fabbricini’s approach is simply not to create more problems for the wounded FIGC. The process for finding a new coach will be a long one.
