Davide Astori was honoured by Fiorentina at his Funeral today.
The world of football was in mourning after Fiorentina Captain and Italy International Davide Astori passed away in his sleep on Sunday at the age of 31, leaving behind a young daughter and a partner.
Astori’s Funeral took place earlier today in Florence as players, Coaches and Directors of Sport across Italian football attended the service to pay their final respects.
Rivalries were pushed to one side as a number of Juventus players attended the Funeral. Juventus Captain Gianluigi Buffon, Mattia De Sciglio, Claudio Marchisio, Miralem Pjanić and Daniele Rugani paid their respects to the Viola Captain. In addition to this General Manager Giuseppe Marotta and Coach Massimiliano Allegri.
Fans of La Viola applauded the Bianconeri stars as they made their way into the Basilica di Santa Croce.
An estimated 10,000 Fiorentina fans gathered outside the Basilica to say their final goodbyes to Astori.
Following the service, Astori’s coffin was taken outside and the Viola faithful paid their final respects to the Captain as many waved flags in honour of Astori.
In a beautiful show of respect Fiorentina fans sang ‘Inno della Fiorentina’ which plays as the players run out onto the pitch at the Stadio Artemio Franchi as purple smoke filled the air.
