Former Lazio Captain: “Francesco Totti Is The Absolute Best”

Nesta nazionale

Alessandro Nesta is not a banal man. Both on and off the field, he is always a concise and efficient professional, who never says anything trivial. In an interview to the Corriere dello Sport, then, the legendary defender has spoken at 360 degrees: his past, his future, Serie A, Lazio, AC Milan, Nazionale, World Cup, and even Francesco Totti and Mario Balotelli.

“I am pretty sure I will be a coach,” he said. “In fact, I already did the first two courses in Italy and will do the third degree Coverciano Master in October as well. As of now, I have only been studying and we will see once I will actually have some experience because I am very aware that the results on the field are everything for a manager. Italy or USA? This is not important, it all depends on the actual offers I will get. I just want any project that would let me prove whether I am good at it or not.”

The 37-year-old also did not hesitate in sponsoring his former teammate Clarence Seedorf as he is the main candidate to replace Massimiliano Allegri at Milan. “Clarence used to tell us that he’s always ready for any challenge; for this reason, if he thinks he’s good enough for it, I am sure he would do very well with the Rossoneri.”

Moreover, about Milan, Nesta also believes that everything bad that is happening to the club is an inevitable result of the rejuvenation process both the roster and the corporation are going through. “Re-building a strong group is not easy at all; what Milan really needs is for Silvio Bersluconi to take on the presidency role again as a full time position, allowing him to spend his energies and passion at all times. For sure, he would be able to fix the problems, also because he would know how and who to buy.”

About the current situation of Serie A, the former defender is convinced that only Juventus could lose the Scudetto race. “The Bianconeri are the absolute best, even from a corporate perspective, considering how well they are organized. As usual, they will win this year’s Scudetto. Of course, Roma, Napoli, and Fiorentina are great teams and won’t give up that easily, but competing with the Old Lady is almost impossible, they are too good.”

As of Roma, his historic rival, Nesta has no doubts that their captain Francesco Totti is still the very best player of Italian football. “I strongly believe that he could play at his level at least until he’s 45 years old. He is an exemplary professional and exceptional at all levels, not only in the field. He sees the game two plays before everyone else does. Honestly, by looking at how he handles the ball, he could even play until he dies.”

Against Totti, Nesta misses playing Rome’s derby, a game they had been competing against ever since they were little kids, in the youth teams of both Lazio and Roma. The former Biancocelesti captain admitted that, when he left Milan, he wanted to return to the club that saw him grow up and close his career there. “At some point, I really wanted it, but there were never the right conditions to do so, also for the economic needs of the club.”

With the World Cup coming up in only a few months, the winner of the 2006 edition also gave his opinion on the Nazionale and its aspirations for the new adventure in Brazil. “The home team will most likely win, given how strong they are and the fact that they’re going to be playing in their home. However, Italy, besides Spain and France, will play a great World Cup and maybe, somewhere along the road, the chances to win will increase. After all, we were not favorites in 2006 and we all saw how it ended. Moreover, I would take into consideration until the last minute both Totti and Antonio Cassano, who could always be beneficial for the Azzurri. My advice? Daniele Bonera should be called-up: he might be one of the most underrated defenders in Italy.”

The two-time Champions League winner concluded with his opinion on the controversial image of Mario Balotelli. “There is one thing nobody can deny, that is Balotelli’s absolute pure talent. Whenever he has the ball, anything can happen. Then of course, he is very impulsive and gets mad easily. I don’t really want to judge other people’s behaviors, but I do believe that at some point he will reach maturity once he will really reflects on his actions.”
