Gennaro Gattuso voices his disappointment with the situation at the club as his squad fall to Torino in the Coppa Italia 4th Round.
While their domestic campaign has not gone in the right direction, Pisa were still very much alive in Coppa Italia as one of the few Serie B squads remaining. Gennaro Gattuso’s men traveled to the Olimpico Grande Torino to face Sinisa Mihajlovic and the Andrea-Belotti led Torino. Although Pisa were able to bring the match into Extra-Time, there would be no Round of 16 birth for the Nerazzuri by the time the final whistle blew. Four different Torino players signed their name on the score-sheet and booked their spot in the next round vs Milan with a resounding 4-0 victory.
Speaking to RaiSport in a post-game interview, Gennaro Gattuso looked back at his team’s performance and admits he has given up on trying to understand the current situation plaguing Pisa:
I played those who have played less. It was important to give minutes to those who needed them but it was not our priority. We want to survive, with all the problems we have. The passion and closeness of the fans help us in handling the problems, but we hope to give them great satisfaction
We created a lot of chances, I do not know why we could not finish them. We must improve. We will get there. We take many shots when we are in the final third, maybe we must do more in the training sessions. It is not only the attackers’ fault.
He was later asked about being the motivator of the squad and then touched about the issues at the club:
It must be understood, I have the fire inside of me. I want to do this and try to improve in every aspect. I have lost hope on the club’s situation. As long I do not see any facts, I will not believe anything anymore. Nothing has changed in the last few days. I am the captain of this ship and I will not leave it.
