Despite an extremely resilient Grifone taking the lead, legendary star Totti, 39 came off the bench once again to help inspire Roma to a hard fought 3-2 win.
Mohamed Salah’s early goal had been cancelled out by Panagiotis Tachtsidis before Leonardo Pavoletti briefly fired Genoa into the lead. That, however, was Totti’s cue to come to the party.
Roma went ahead as early as the 6 minute mark, via Mohamed Salah’s early goal. Panagiotis Tachtsidis then cancelled out Salah’s early goal to draw the two sides level. Leonardo Pavoletti, a player who has spent a majority of his career in the lower tiers of Italian football helped Genoa take the lead.
A victory would help boost Roma’s chance of securing 2nd spot in Serie A – albeit temporarily at least – well aware of this Roma went straight to work on the hosts.
Salah grabbed the opener after only six minutes, the Egyptian playing a one-two with former Genoa winger Diego Perotti before beating Eugenio Lamanna with an angled drive.
Roma were shocked eight minutes later, as the Grifone managed to equalise. Tachtsidis – himself a former Roma player – collected Diego Laxalts assist and placed the ball out of Roma custodian Wojciech Szczesny’s reach. The Giallorossi had the chance to restored their vaunted lead before the break but El Shaarawy was unable to beat Lamanna, as he was thwarted on three separate attempts. It was clear that Genoa gaffer Gianpiero Gasperini had used half time to regroup, and they emerged onto the pitch with new found enthusiasm.
Szczesny’s goal was twice tested, as Suso ran riot in the visitors half, and in the 66th minute, Rossoblu finally got their just rewards. Pavoletti found himself in the right place at the right time, as Tomas Rincon passed into Roma’s box and Pavoletti lashed in a unstoppable finish. Totti – subbed on at the hour mark – emerged in the 77th minute to make his presence keenly felt.
The evergreen striker pounced upon a long-range free-kick to rasp the ball over Lamanna’s, and effectively draw the game level.
Inspired by their superstar veteran, Roma began to push even harder to gain the winner and a valuable 3 points, and found it via El Shaaarawy with only three minutes remaining on the clock.
Edin Dzeko supplied a fabolous through ball and Lamanna was finally bested via a powerful effort for Roma’s third and final match winning goal.
