Italy’s captain Gianluigi Buffon was brought to tears after his side fell to Germany in the penalty shoot-out. The legendary Juventus keeper spoke about the performance after the match.
“We overcame great obstacles, we were very close to achieving a great feat. A route has been set out. I will leave an important legacy which will allow for great things to happen. It’s a difficult time for all of us. We thought that we had done something exceptional but we couldn’t quite see it off. It’s rare for a team to miss three penalties and then that’s still not enough to win.”
“Regrets can arrive when you feel you didn’t give everything but that’s not the case. We were a step away from a great feat. After an evening like that there’s nothing to blame yourself for. We’re just sorry to be going home. I’m sad for the fans who were always with us. We were compact and hard to beat but destiny wasn’t with us this time. The praise that we have received in recent minutes makes us feel proud of what we have done.”
“To have a hardworking and united group is our greatest victory. It paves the way for future successes.”
Despite failing in their attempt to win a European Championship, Italy will still have their captain for World Cup 2018 in Russia as Buffon confirmed he will continue on for his country.
