Gokhan Inler was interviewed by Swiss media outlet Tages Anzeiger after Napoli’s heartbreaking 3-1 loss to Borussia Dortmund. The midfielder knows the club has struggled but believes the squad has the talent and toughness to see past their recent woes. “We came out and concentrated fully from the first minute in a very difficult environment,” Inler said of yesterday’s Champions League matchday five fixture. Dortmund looked ripe for the taking having lost their last three matches but Jurgen Klopp’s side took advantage of some key defensive errors and were the beneficiary of a controversial penalty and a lack of finishing by the Azzurri. “Now is the time for us to react,” Inler said.
Napoli needed only a draw in the game against Dortmund to advance but the defeat now makes the Europa League a likely destination for the Partenopei. The club faces the unenviable task of having to defeat Arsenal by three clear goals at home in two weeks in order to advance to the knockout stages.
For his part, Inler, played the last 30 minutes of the match against Dortmund subbing on for fellow Swiss midfielder Blerim Dzemaili. Inler himself came very close to changing the outcome of the contest as a few of his trademark long-range shots were either saved or just off-target. Napoli now look to get back on track when they play Lazio at home on Monday, December 2.
