After a good showing at the Euros with Slovakia, Marek Hamsik is having to deal once again with interest from Europe’s biggest names.
Marek Hamsik and Napoli have been bound by love for nearly a decade. It’s a mutual affection that’s rarely seen in modern football. But sometimes even the most precious relationships come to an end and the array of clubs on the Slovakian’s tail leave many thinking that this love affair may be nearing its end.
The man himself is eager to put worried Neapolitan minds to rest, for the time being. ‘My priority is clear – it’s Napoli’, he said at an event organised by his father at Banska Bystrica. ‘Right now I’m not thinking about anything else, in the future we’ll see’.
One of the clubs eager to take him away from Naples is Bayern Munich and Hamisk admits that ‘there has been some interest but it hasn’t gone beyond that’. If it were to, however, he might be open the idea, ‘it wasn’t me who rejected their offer, there are situations that don’t depend only on me’, he said.
Maybe Hamsik’s love for Naples runs deeper than the allure of one of the world’s super clubs. Maybe he just wants to feel a little more appreciated at home. Maybe all he wants is an extension of his current contract, which has two years left on it.
His father was after all reported as saying to Slovakian newspaper Zivot, ‘Marek has always said that Napoli is the club that he loves and that he’d like to finish his career in their colours but it’s not sure whether or not that will be the case’.
As Hamsik returns to Naples and sits down with the club to discuss it all, his willingness to stay and their willingness to resist the opportunity to cash in will become clear.
