Inter Coach Stefano Pioli stressed his side understand they must sacrifice to cut the gap in their chase for a Champions League place.

Despite going a goal down to a Sergio Pellissier goal late in the first half, Inter Milan fought back to claim a well deserved  3-1 victory against Chievo at the San Siro. Pioli’s side have been in terrific form, having won five Serie A games on the bounce since their humbling 3-0 reverse against Napoli back in early December. The Nerazzurri now find themselves in 5th place, only two points behind the Partenopei (albeit having played a game more) and talk of finishing in the top three has resurfaced. However, the Inter coach was not getting carried away speaking at the press conference after the match;

“I’m happy for the players, for the desire and the qualities that have been put in place…the team now has understood that they must sacrifice: We understand that only hard work can lead to sustained results…Do not look at the standings, we have to run as much. January is a crucial month because we want to shorten the gap.”

Inter’s hunger and sacrifice was certainly on show this evening as they were relentless in their efforts to level the scoring. The equalizer of course came from Mauro Icardi, latching onto a beautiful cross into the six yard area from the right by Candreva. It was the Inter captain’s 15th goal of the season (the third season he has managed that tally) and Pioli had further words of encouragement for the Argentine’s influence;

“He has exceptional numbers but also does an amazing job for the incredible team, he moved a lot and gave us so many solutions.”

Despite having signed for the club in a 28 Million Euro deal only three days earlier, Roberto Gagliardini was thrown into the Inter starting line up this evening. The 22 year old had been in exceptional form for Atalanta during their fairy tale 1st half of the season and he certainly didn’t disappoint his new coach in what was a very promising debut from the Inter number 5;

“I think he arrived at Inter because he deserved it. He has great positional sense and rightly emphasized his personality to how it’s presented at the San Siro.”

Inter’s next game is on Tuesday night in the Coppa Italia Round of 16 at home to Bologna with Pioli hinting that he may rest Icardi and play ‘Gabigol’ Gabriel Barbosa. The 20 year old Brazilian Forward has only made 3 substitute appearances so far in Serie A and failed to make it off the bench this evening, instead Pioli went for Palacio;

“I needed a player with more legs on the outside. Will he play in the Coppa Italia? Let’s see. He’s ready to play”
