Gabbiadini scores on his debut with Southampton

The former Napoli man made his debut with the Saints this afternoon and scored the opening goal despite his team falling 3-1 at home to West Ham. After much anticipation, Manolo Gabbiadini made his awaited debut for his new club and proved he can be a threat in the Premier League.

Manager Claud Puel hinted yesterday after training that we could see the Italian international from the beginning of the match.

The 25 year old played a solid match all around. He opened the scoring after 12 minutes of play with a bullet of a strike that left the keeper helpless. Gabbiadini was impressive early on with his link up play as he often dropped deep and frequently became involved in the play, also drawing three fouls in midfield when in possession. Despite being starved for service for most of the match, he wasted a gift from Kouyate that would have pulled his side within a goal with over half an hour to play.

Statistically, Gabbiadini registered a total of  6 shots, and completed 76% of his passes. In match where Southampton were wasteful in possession, Gabbiadini was considerably impressive in finding outlet passes when possible.

Overall, Southampton fans can be satisfied with the Italian’s performance. Having never played a Premier League match before,  it was an unexpected solid performance. There should be plenty of optimism going forward for him as he showed he can fit into the Premier League just fine.
