Interim Italy Manager Luigi Di Biagio has been testing out a 4-3-3 line-up for Friday’s friendly against Argentina.
Di Biagio will take charge of the Azzurri for two friendlies this month against Argentina and England and the results could determine whether Di Biagio is handed the job on a permanent basis in June.
Di Biagio was formerly the Under-21 manager of Italy and during his time with the Azzurrini he used a 4-3-3 formation.
The squad he has called-up suggests that he will use the 4-3-3 with the senior team as he has the right players to make the formation work.
At the back for the Azzurri Giorgio Chellini and Alessio Romagnoli are suffering from injuries so Leonardo Bonucci will be partnered by his former Juventus teammate Daniele Rugani.
Leonardo Spinazzola and Alessandro Florenzi are expected to flank Bonucci and Rugani in a new look defence.
The midfield three will have two certainties and they are Jorginho of Napoli and Marco Verratti of Paris Saint-Germain. The third player in the centre of the pitch will be one of Giacomo Bonaventura, Lorenzo Pellegrini and Bryan Cristante.
Bonaventura of Milan is likely to start alongside Jorginho and Verratti as his experience is deemed important for the Argentina match.
Napoli superstar Lorenzo Insigne hasn’t enjoyed a particularly successful Italy career mainly due to the fact that he hasn’t been consistently deployed in his natural left-wing position for La Nazionale.
A 4-3-3 formation will allow Di Biagio to have Insigne play in his natural position where he is most effective.
The right side of the attacking trio will see Fiorentina’s Federico Chiesa play as he makes his debut for the senior team.
Ciro Immobile has been one of Europe’s most prolific strikers this season as the Lazio gunman has scored 34 goals in 38 games in all competitions. Immobile’s fine form will see him start in the centre of Italy’s front three on Friday.
