After reaching an agreement with Zenit for Axel Witsel, Juventus’ move for the Belgian has fallen through.
Despite finding an agreement of 18 million euros plus bonuses for the midfielder, Axel Witsel will not be joining Juventus. At first, the deal was halted because Zenit wanted more money in bonuses. Once they found an agreement for that, the Russian club refused to let Witsel go until they found a replacement. Then, once that hurdle was surpassed, Zenit’s manager Mircea Lucescu blocked the player’s transfer to Juventus.
As a result, the Zenit midfielder will not be swapping Russia for Turin this transfer window and will likely have to wait until the end of the season when his contract expires. Given his contract situation, it’s possible that Juventus will get him for free. In fact, Gianluca Di Marzio reports that he will join the club in June on a free transfer. While it looked all but certain that Witsel would join Juve this summer, especially considering the player was in Turin earlier today, the move has officially collapsed.
