Lazio manager Simone Inzaghi reflected on his side’s performance in their penalty shoot-out defeat to Milan in his post-match interview.
Lazio were eliminated from the Coppa Italia in the semi-final at the hands of Milan who defeated them 5-4 on penalties after both legs ended 0-0.
Inzaghi was disappointed at the result as his side was unable to play in a second successive Coppa Italia Final against Juventus.
The Italian skipper reflected on the match in an interview after the game with Rai Sport, feeling that his Lazio side deserved to be in the final over Milan.
“Milan had two very good games, but probably over the course of the two legs, we deserved to be in the Coppa Italia Final, but that is football, I compliment my lads and the only thing they did wrong was not being able to finalise any of the chances over two legs.”
Inzaghi discussed the game tonight in more depth as well.
“I think we took the initiative for 120 minutes tonight and only failed to score a goal. Unfortunately, when you don’t find the net, you don’t go forward, but we leave this competition with our heads held high.”
Milan goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma played a key role in the penalty shoot-out as he saved two penalties from Sergej Milinković-Savić and Lucas Leiva. Inzaghi praised the 19 year-old for his performance.
“My players were unfortunate to be facing a great goalkeeper like Gianluigi Donnarumma, who had a remarkable performance. We had 11 corners to two and should’ve flooded the opposition penalty area more.”
Lazio face Juventus on Saturday in Serie A at the Stadio Olimpico. The game earlier this season between the two at Juventus’ Allianz Stadium ended in a 2-1 victory for I Biancocelesti.
Inzaghi on this weekend’s meeting with the current Italian champions.
“We must now leave this competition behind us and think about Serie A. We would’ve liked a day or so more to recover, but must respect that the Bianconeri have a Champions League match coming up. Let me make it clear that I am proud to be at the head of a squad like this.”
