Roma boss Luciano Spalletti held his pre-match press conference today ahead of tomorrow’s game against Juventus.
Luciano Spalletti spoke to the press today discussing Roma’s away match in Turin vs Juventus tomorrow night. Here are his words:
“In today’s European game a team has to be able to change their approach on the field. Some changes are natural, but one situation where there’s a huge difference is moving from a back three to a four. Take Juve for example, you see they’re very good at switching between different set-ups. We had more time this week to work on it so we were able to work on it more.”
“Juve have been great this season. As for us, if we go believing we can win, we will be able to do it. If we don’t go in believing we can win, we won’t get 3 points.”
“Nainggolan has the ability to get forward and win the ball. He’s a player who can cover the whole field. You need to give him freedom, he’s a box-to-box midfielder.”
“I’ve spoken to Gervinho and he’s unsettled by other potential offers. He’s important to us but I think it’s important he puts his heart and soul into playing for Roma. I don’t want half measures and if that’s the case, we can move on and get someone who offers what we are looking for.”
“El Shaarawy? I remember him as a good player. Good technical abilities, puts in effort and has an eye for goal. I had the chance to speak to him and I liked the signals he gave me.”
“I have a lot of respect for Castan. He’s going through a tough time so we must leave him in peace. I think he needs some regular football. We’ll talk with him and see what’s best for him. Roma comes second here, we’ll do what’s right for Castan the man & the footballer.”
“The fact that everyone is writing about it (playing 3 at the back) is because I have tried it out. We’re always being watched. It’s true I put in some time working on a three-man defence. If you stick another defender behind Digne & Florenzi you can given them ten extra yards without risking being exposed defensively.”
“Francesco (Totti) had a serious injury and he probably felt it in his return vs Milan. He’s been training all week, he’s available, even if his age takes longer to recover. Playing him with Dzeko is possible, especially with the system we’ve worked with this week.”
“We’re talking about top quality players (on the topic of playing 3 at the back). Take Rudiger for example, he has played with three at back for Germany. It requires more quality in possession, let’s see if we can bring someone in for that position who can do both things. The attributes of the players at your disposal are important in situations like this.”
“Edin doesn’t have to struggle, he’s got abilities to our #9. He just needs to wait for the right moment to get into his form. He needs to score and feel the trust around him. At Roma it’s difficult sometimes to communicate that trust to someone who isn’t performing. We are obsessed with results here and want to reach our objective straight away. Edin is a top player and I don’t see weak points in his game. Anyone would want him, he does it all. He’s got good technique, he’s quick for his size and he’s good in the air. He needs patience, his time will come”.
