Jose Mourinho is looking to Serie A to bolster the Red Devils’ defense in January.
Lazio defender Stephan De Vrij is at the top of the list as he’s been widely regarded as his side’s best defender over the last couple of seasons.
Mourinho is on the market for defensive reinforcements mainly due to United’s poor form in the back and because Eric Bailly will be involved in the AFCON 2017 in January.
Rome based newspaper Il Messaggero reports De Vrij has rejected a few new contract offers from the Biancoceleste and is keen on a move abroad. Manchester United are not new to the hunt for the Dutch international’s services.
An interesting choice of words in the report indicate Manchester United are “a step away” from landing De Vrij in January. Although no other outlets in the peninsula confirm this, there is reason to believe this may be true. Lazio president Claudio Lotito has a tradition of selling players for big money moves and nearly sold Felipe Anderson to United back in 2015.
De Vrij joined Lazio for a modest €7 million in 2014 from his homeclub of Feyenoord. The Dutchman has been compared to the likes of Samuel Umtiti who plies his trade with Barcelona.
