Marco Verratti beat out four other nominees to win his first Pallone Azzurro award.

The 23-year-old midfielder has claimed the Pallone Azzurro award for the year, claiming the prize from 2014 winner Matteo Darmian.

Verratti was selected as one of the top five finalists along with Gianluigi Buffon, Antonio Candreva, Graziano Pelle, and Alessandro Florenzi.

The five finalists were selected by RAI Sports, and the winner was voted on by fans on the website vivoazzurro.it.

Voting for the 2016 winner will begin in December.
