Napoli suffered their first defeat of the season, 1-0 at the hands of Atalanta. These are the player ratings based on the performances in Bergamo.
Pepe Reina (6): Despite allowing one goal, Reina made a couple of saves that kept Napoli in the match. The keeper did well handling the ball with his feet whenever his teammates played the ball back to him.
Elseid Hysaj (5): Hysaj has had a couple of rough games this season, and this was one of them. He was beat out wide a couple of times during the match and the service for Andrea Petagna’s goal came from his side. Hysaj has played better matches than this.
Nikola Maksimovic (6): Maksimovic made his first Serie A start for Napoli this season. The Serbian played well and did his job as a central defender.
Kalidou Koulibaly (5.5): Like Hysaj, Koulibaly has had better games. The defender played a part in Petagna’s goal for Atalanta: the service was whipped in and Koulibaly tried to clear the ball with his head, only to have it graze the top of his head and hit Faouzi Ghoulam in the face. Petagna easily slotted home the goal. Koulibaly also found himself too far down the field on offense at times, which promoted Atalanta counter-attacks.
Faouzi Ghoulam (5.5): Ghoulam, as mentioned above, was unfortunately involved in Atalanta’s goal. The ball hit the defender in the face and bounced to Petagna for the goal. The Algerian took a good free kick that almost ended in a goal, but his crosses into the box were not too impressive.
Piotr Zielinksi (6): Zielinski started in place of Allan in the midfield. This was not his best game, but Zielinski made some good runs in the first half to try to make things happen on offense.
Jorginho (5.5): Jorginho looked very fatigued in this match. He didn’t play to his normal standard of accurate, killer passes. It seems that the midfielder could use some rest.
Marek Hamsik (5.5): Napoli’s captain did not have too great of a game, just like the rest of the midfield. Hamsik tried to organize passes and set up the offense for success, but it wasn’t meant to be today.
Jose Callejon (5): Besides a shot on goal in the first half, Callejon did not make much of an impact on the match. Callejon is one of, if not the most consistent players for Napoli, but today was not one the Spaniard would like to remember. Dries Mertens replaced Callejon in the second half.
Arkadiusz Milik (5.5): The Polish forward and the rest of Napoli’s offense could not get much going today in Bergamo. Milik hit a volley very well in the first half that warranted a save from Berisha, but that was the forward’s brightest showing in the match.
Lorenzo Insigne (5.5): Insigne continues to search for his form from last season. Both starting wingers for Napoli had a tough game. Insigne did not really create much going forward.
Dries Mertens (5): Mertens came on as a substitute for Jose Callejon in the 54′. Normally, the Belgian is able to contribute greatly off the bench, but he made no significant impact today.
Manolo Gabbiadini (5.5): Gabbiadini replaced Jorginho in the 72′. He and Milik were on the pitch at the same time, but both forwards did not produce a goal for the azzurri.
Emanuele Giaccherini (N/A): Giaccherini made his Napoli debut against Atalanta. He substituted Insigne in the 79′. Giaccherini was able to gain some match minutes, but was not involved enough to gain a performance rating.
Maurizio Sarri (5): Sarri’s lack of a squad rotation continues and therefore, criticism arrives for the manager. Napoli invested in multiple young midfielders in the summer transfer window: Marko Rog, Amadou Diawara and Piotr Zielinski. The manager has started Zielinski a bunch of times already, but has not given Jorginho or Marek Hamsik a proper rest. Jorginho has looked fatigued and a lack of squad rotation could be the cause.
