Genoa’s preparations for the upcoming season are on-going and they did not take long to find a replacement for departed striker Alberto Gilardino, who announced this morning via his twitter account that he will be going to China and join fellow Italians Marcello Lippi and Alessandro Diamanti.
The 32 year-old Gilardino will be replaced by 29 year-old Alessandro Matri, who will join Genoa on loan from Milan.
Matri has struggled for both Milan and Fiorentina ever since he was acquired from Juventus last season. Despite this, an agreement has been reached between Milan and Genoa on a loan, where Milan will pay part of Matri’s €2.6M salary.
According to Sky Sport, Matri is looking for a fresh start
“I want to prove to everyone that last season was just a bad year and want to put it behind me. I am motivated to start the new season well. I am happy that I will join the most historic club in Italy where I will have an opportunity to grow and start new. I want to demonstrate my value to this club and to its great fans.”
Matri was also asked about the national team, “For now my only thoughts are to do well at Genoa, with good performances I may get called up.”
