Chievo defender Federico Mattiello holds no grudge towards Radja Nainggolan after suffering a horrific injury in Sunday’s match against Roma. He is aiming for a comeback after undergoing successful surgery.
Nicolo Schira of Gazzetta Dello Sport spoke to the 19 year-old defender (who is being loaned by Juventus). Here is a recap.
Federico Mattiello is still in pain, but the affection of the football world is comforting during this difficult time. Having both his tibia and fibula fractured in such a horrific way has caught the attention of all of Italy. Operated Sunday evening in an emergency surgery, he is recovering at Sacro Cuore di Negrar hospital near Verona.
Mattiello thanked everyone for their support:
“My heartfelt thanks to everyone for their thoughts, they give me added inspiration. It does not often happen where all fans are united like this. Many colleagues have been supportive during this time. Out of respect to everyone I won’t choose a message in particular, they were all special. I don’t want to miss anyone.”
“I received Radja’s apology, everything is cleared up between us. The support I received via social media by the many fans was tremendous.”
The doctor comes into the room where Federico is recovering and advises it is time to do some check-ups. There is no time to waste. Although this setback has slowed his progression, Mattiello doesn’t want to dwell on this and wants to return as fast as possible.
