Dries Mertens aided Napoli in defeating AC Milan 4-2 in Napoli’s home opener at the Stadio San Paolo on Saturday night. Following the match, Mertens spoke to Sky Sport about the match, his playing time and the glares to his coach last game.
Mertens on his role with the team:
“We played good football, we conceded two goals in ten minutes and we can’t do that, but today we deserved (the win). I am here to work and give my all; I think Napoli bought me for this. Sometimes I’m on the bench and it’s not easy, while other times I have to play; I try everything.”
Sky Sport asked Mertens if the coach asks them to play differently without Higuain. He responded and also commented on his new teammate Arek Milik:
“The coach asks us to do different things without Higuain? No, we spend more time together and learn all things; we are working well and that is a big difference. Milik? He is a strong player; he still has to learn many things. We have to learn many things; in the first have we made mistakes with passes, but he is a very strong player and he demonstrated that with his two goals.”
Mertens also spoke about his contract when asked by Sky: “No, we are talking, but it is going well. It is not important to talk about this, I want to be focused on the field; I like to play here.”
Last week at Pescara, Mertens glared to the bench towards Sarri when he scored his two goals. The Belgian commented on his actions:
“It is a thing that I did and I am sorry. It is something I should not do, but sometimes in a match there is adrenaline and a player always wants to play. I’m sorry that I did this; it is not good for me and for the team either. I’m sorry, but I want to play.”
Dries Mertens is in great form and he looks to keep providing a huge spark for Napoli when they face Palermo next in the Serie A.
