Napoli defeated Cagliari 5-0 away from home at the Stadio Sant’Elia on Sunday afternoon.
Dries Mertens led the partenopei to victory with a hat-trick. The Belgian spoke to Sky Sport about the importance of the win after the team beat Benfica in the UEFA Champions League midweek.
“We’ve always played great football, but we were often not able to score or conceded goals at the end. Now, we are on the right track. Today was important because sometimes we’ve got games wrong after the Champions League, but today we did well.”
Mertens said Napoli was never troubled despite those who considered the team to be in a crisis prior to the Inter game.
“We never thought about a crisis. Our game has always been there, it’s just that we made too many mistakes in front of the net. In some games we took 11 shots and only scored one goal; that makes a difference. I think this game was important.”
The winger has now scored four goals in his last two matches overall.
Napoli moves up to 31 points with the victory and wait to see what other clubs around them in the league table do this weekend. The azzurri will play Torino next at the Stadio San Paolo on Sunday, Dec. 18.
