Following a successful first half of the season in Serie A and an impressive win over Juventus in the Suppercoppa, AC Milan still find themselves with some holes to fill within the squad.

According to La Gazzetta Dello Sport, Milan have made it clear that their primary necessities in January are to sign an additional central midfielder and a wide attacker. Following the injury to club captain Riccardo Montolivo, it has been Manuel Locatelli’s job to play as the regista for the rossonerri. While many questioned the youngsters readiness to be in the starting eleven, he proved many critics wrong with great confidence and stunning strikes against Sassuolo and league leaders Juventus. While the youngster has responded very well to the pressure, it is evident that there is no real legitimate secondary option behind him. Sosa was very unconvincing in his few appearances in the position, while Andrea Bertolacci has played fairly well when called upon. However, due to his injury issues in the past, Bertolacci may not be the secondary option Montella is looking for throughout the second half of the season.

In addition to the questions in midfield, Milan also have an issue in their width attacking positions. So far this season, we have seen the likes of Niang, Suso, and Bonvantura occupy the flanks of Milan’s attack. However, the only constant within the three has been Suso as Bonaventura has often dropped to midfield when Niang is selected. Suso has been brilliant for the rossonerri this season and has arguably been Milan’s best player next to Bonaventura. With Keisuke Honda likely on the move come January, this leaves Montella with no secondary option behind the Spaniard. If Suso were to get injured or suspended it would mean Montella would have to adapt other players into a position they are unfamiliar with. Therefore, it is likely Milan will target a depth player who can step into Suso’s position when he is not available to the squad.

It will be interesting to see how Milan fair in January’s transfer window, with Champions League aspirations there are evident depth positions that need to be filled in order to finish in the top three this season.
