Vincenzo Montella spoke to the media ahead of Milan’s opening game of the season against Torino.
In his first competitive game as Milan manager, Montella comes up against Sinisa Mihajlovic who was sacked in March by the Rossoneri.
“I am proud and thrilled because this is the experience that managers like Ancelotti and Allegri experienced in the past, managers that have won a lot in their careers. I am very excited, and I can’t wait to start”.
“Now it’s the result that matters. There’s no more time to experiment. We must play to win putting on the pitch the work we have done until now. The matches against Chelsea and Freiburg are two good examples of how we should play”.
The challenge of Torino
“Torino has changed a few players from last season. Sinisa (Mihajlovic, ed.) is a manager that can pass down a lot of energy to the team. He managed this also last year with AC Milan, and that’s the basis I will start from. We know each other as managers and probably also our players know Sinisa’ s philosophy, though it’s more important working on your own qualities rather than the oppononents’”.
“There are some teams that are better equipped than us. This is stimulating. I trust the boys and I hope they will prove on the pitch they are worth a lot and that they will play as a team to win the game. Our goal is to qualify for the Europa League. My personal goal, as a manager, is to unite the group and work on the players’ self confidence, because without these two components you don’t go very far. Look at the Italian Volley team yesterday night: playing as a team they have reached their goal, and that’s the example to follow”.
Last season, Milan finished a disappointing seventh place, missing out on European football via League position and defeat in the Coppa Italia Final to Juventus confirmed another year without a place in Europe for the third year in a row.
“I don’t personally think a manager on his own can perform miracles, all the components must work together towards the same objective.
“It’s not easy for the fans, I understand. We will have to try to bring them back and make them happy again, trying to reach our goals playing fine football. Our fans are the added value, the 12th man on the pitch, they have been in the past, and they will be in the future”
The summer signings and players involved in tomorrow’s game against Torino
“This is not a surprise to me. I knew the financial situation of the club and every decision has been made in relation to that. Sosa? He fits in my style of play, I only judge players on a technical-tactical basis. In this afternoons’ training we will decide whether he will be called up for the match. Gomez? He’s a player with a temperamental character, we have always known this. He is a different kind of player from the other defenders in the squad, he will be very useful to us. Of course, we must give him some time to get to know Italian football better but I am very satisfied with his approach”.
“Honda is fit and ready to play. He has adapted perfectly to my style of play and he will be called up for tomorrow’s match. Bacca? He is working a lot for the team in the non possession phase, but his best quality is his eye for goal. Niang? He has everything to become a great player. He lacks a bit of continuity but he is still young and I am positive he will improve in the future”.
