Sportmediaset reports that Napoli owner Aurelio De Laurentiis is planning a meeting with current Borussia Dortmund manager Jurgen Klopp, with an eye on making him an eventual replacement for Rafa Benitez.
Benitez has been vague about his future all season, despite Napoli’s strong showing in the league, and the feeling is that his time with the Partenopei may be coming to an end sooner rather than later. Recently, he postponed talks on a contract extension, causing speculation in the press and, potentially, inspiring De Laurentiis to look elsewhere.
Klopp, for his part, has a contract with Borussia Dortmund until 2018. Dortmund’s league form however has been particularly bad, and they currently find themselves hovering just above the relegation zone. The 47-year-old Klopp has already racked up an impressive list of accomplishments as a manager including two Bundesliga titles (both with Dortmund), runner-up in the Champions League and runner-up FIFA World Coach of the Year, and would be unlikely to relish a move down to the German second division. If Dortmund’s fortunes do not improve, Klopp’s future could be very much an open question.
