Napoli and its Belgian winger Dries Mertens are making progress on a contract renewal.
Napoli is looking to tie down the 2016 Belgian Footballer of the year for the long term. Gianluca Di Marzio reported on Friday that the two sides are already making progress on the new contract. Lawyers are already working on the terms of the contract, so that Mertens can soon sign.
The new contract will feature an exit clause. However, the clause is more specific than the ones seen in recent contracts. The new deal will hold an exit clause for foreign clubs only. In addition, the clause will be valid starting 2018 and onward.
Mertens’ exit clause gets even more specific: the release clause will be 35 million euros for Chinese clubs and 50 million euros for European clubs.
The Belgian has been instrumental in Napoli’s recent form of six wins in its last seven games. Mertens has scored nine goals in his last five games for the partenopei.
Napoli and Aurelio De Laurentiis are showing that they would like to keep Mertens at the Stadio San Paolo for years to come.
