Napoli defeated Atalanta by a score of 2-1 at home on Monday afternoon to retain second place in the Serie A standings with a 2-point lead over Roma. Following the match, Napoli coach Maurizio Sarri spoke to Premium Sport, breaking the club’s media silence.

On Ranieri winning the BPL Title:

“It is well known that Italian coaches are of a high level. I am happy for the coach (Ranieri); it is the crowning of an extraordinary career.”

On the match against Atalanta:

“We played the start of match in which we had a plan, then we loosened up and in the second half we were at the height of our best performances. I feel sorry to have conceded a goal in a match in which Reina did not have to make even one intervention. I saw a good effort, especially in the second half. Higuain? He ran so much, it was only right for him to come out to catch his breath.”

“If we do not express a good offensive rhythm a high defensive intensity then we will concede something. It is for the first time that many of them are having a season of this type, lots of nervous energy being spent. The team has a great potential; it must grow from the mentality point of view.”

When asked about his midfielders scoring:

Hamsik can score some more goals; even tonight he had a great chance. Allan has a little less chances, but is improving in this respect and tonight he hit the crossbar. I am always looking at Sacchi’s ideas: when he was at AC Milan he wanted a midfield with freedom; they told him to build it alone. I will do the same: if a midfielder arrives that scores more goals, it is good, otherwise we will get the players that we have, to score.”

On scoring many goals this season:

“We’re happy, but we could have scored even more. The goal is to have a higher conversion rate.”

On the renewal of his contract:

“The president and I met a month ago and we decided to talk about the contract at the end of the season. I am pleased by the statement made by De Laurentiis.”
