Napoli are keen on signing a quality defender in January and have set their sights on Torino’s Nikola Maksimovic.
According to Sky Sport, Napoli will try to broker a deal with Torino over the availability of Nikola Maksimovic once Henrique’s transfer away from the club to Fluminense becomes official. While the contacts between both clubs have just begun, there is a sense of optimism at Napoli regarding a potential deal for the Serbian defender.
At the moment, Maurizio Sarri has been able to solidify the Napoli defence largely thanks to the play of Kalidou Koulibaly. That said, the Frenchman is still without a reliable partner as Raul Albiol has proven inconsistent. The signing of Maksimovic would go a long way in remedying something that has proven to be Napoli’s achilles heel over the years and give them a necessary push in the Scudetto race.
Maksimovic has been among the better defenders in the league despite flying under the radar for the most part. At the moment, he is nursing an injury but he is expected to recover shortly. Alongside Kamil Glik and Emiliano Moretti, Maksimovic has formed an impressive back three that has backstopped a deep run into the Europa League.
The 24-year-old has made only two appearances this season due to injury struggles.
