The Belgian has had a stellar campaign so far, and has been consistently magnificent ever since Sarri famously switched him from Left Wing to Center-Forward.
The ex PSV Eindhoven forward has spent the last 5 seasons at Napoli and hasn’t looked back ever since. After a campaign in which he scored 29 goals (2016/2017), Napoli renegotiated his contract so that it would be pretty much impossible for him to leave last summer. However, things are a bit different now. Mertens CAN leave to any club, outside of Italy, for a measly €28million. Pennies, considering how much impact he has had on the Partenopei.
According to Gianluca Di Marzio of Sky Sport Italia, Napoli want to renegotiate his contract to get rid of the low release clause and to possibly keep the Belgian at Napoli for a few more seasons. It is reported that Mertens will consider ridding his contract of the release clause if Napoli president Aurelio De Laurentiis, is willing to increase his weekly wages substantially.
Mertens currently earns €4million + bonuses and he is asking for at least €6million/season if he is to agree to parting ways with the release clause. This would be a very important revelation in the Napoli camp as it has been widely reported Mertens was to part ways with the Partenopei this coming summer.
With a renegotiated contract and a motivated Dries Mertens, Napoli are looking to keep their champion for years to come.
