Napoli veteran Christian Maggio spoke to Sky Sport following the team’s match against Chievo on Saturday night. Maggio started the game in place of Elseid Hysaj at right back, the position in which he started at consistently a few years ago.
Maggio spoke about not playing much last year and how he approaches playing time now:
“Clearly it is difficult to play in this situation; you know you have few chances and you have to make the best of them. Last year was not easy mentally; I was used to always playing and to find yourself on the bench, it was complicated. Now I started this season with a different mentality. It doesn’t matter when I play, but what counts is that I’m ready when the coach sends me onto the field.”
Maggio also commented about the victory against Chievo and putting pressure on Juventus:
“With Chievo we knew it would not be easy. We did well to score two goals and to manage the result in the second half. Even in the past we always tried to cause difficulties for Juve; the important thing is to always be there and hope that Juve weakens a bit sooner or later. On paper they are favorites, but we will try to annoy them as much as we can.”
On the way Napoli wingers try to play, Maggio said:
“With the runs of (Jose) Callejon and (Piotr) Zielinski, for us full-backs in defense, more spaces open. We always study the opponent and these movements are practiced during the week.”
Marek Hamsik scored his 100th goal for Napoli in the match against Chievo. Maggio was asked if the club would celebrate Hamsik’s accomplishment to which Maggio answered:
“We don’t have much time, but I know that something has been done (for Hamsik). Tomorrow we have the day off we’ll use it to be with the families.”
Napoli will play Benfica in Champions League action at home at the Stadio San Paolo.
