The Valencia defender made his debut with the senior national team on Wednesday evening.
Speaking to RAI after Italy’s 1-1 draw against Ukraine in Genova, Cristiano Piccini explained how he felt after “conquering a dream” by appearing for the Azzurri.
“For every players it’s the dream to make it to the national team,” Piccini said.
“I conquered it after a lot of work and many sacrifices. For me it’s a great satisfaction. I’ve been abroad many years, it’s an achievement on a personal level and for my family, who’ve always been behind me, and for my wife.”
Piccini then described how he found out about being called up on Monday morning.
“I had played the night before against Barcelona, then I woke up to a text from Simone Zaza, they had asked him for my number. The Team Manager called me, I booked my flight and then I left immediately.”
