Player Ratings: Juventus-Napoli

It was an Argentinean affair in Doha for this year’s Supercoppa in a game that saw both Juventus’ Carlos Tevez and Napoli’s Gonzalo Higuain net a brace for their respective teams. At the end of the day it wasn’t meant to be for the Bianconeri who eventually lost to Rafa Benitez’ side in a penalty shootout.

Massimiliano Allegri (6.0): His decision to take off Andrea Pirlo will be heavily criticized but given the situation he really cannot be blamed. However, he is partly to blame for his side taking their foot off the gas following both their goals but will be disappointed to see his side squander countless opportunities to win the game.

Gianluigi Buffon (8.0): Perhaps the man of the match in today’s game, the Juventus captain had an immense game. He was unlucky not to emerge victorious following his three penalty shot saves and his two great saves on Gonzalo Higuain.

Stephan Lichtsteiner (6.0): The Swiss international was his usual self marauding the right flank causing all kinds of problems for Napoli’s Faouzi Ghoulam. However, he was subbed off by Simone Padoin before he was able to cause any real damage.

Giorgio Chiellini (5.5): The Italian defender looked suspect on more than one occasion tonight, particularly on a few clearances. Squandered the opportunity to win the game for his side when he missed the crucial penalty shot. It must be note that three other players missed as well though.

Leonardo Bonucci (6.5): Once again Juventus’ best defender on the night, the former Bari man is staking a claim as Italy’s best defender. Hit his penalty in the same way he played the whole match; with confidence.

Patrice Evra (6.5): The Frenchman put in yet another solid performance for the Italian champions. The veteran defender is starting to finally settle in into life in Italy. Evra was unlucky not register an assist on the night when Vidal’s effort was cleared off the line.

Claudio Marchisio (6.0): The Juventus youth product was highly ineffectual throughout the game until he was moved into Pirlo’s position. Following Pirlo’s substitution, Marchisio exerted greater influence on the game and started to kick things into gear for his team.

Andrea Pirlo (5.5): The midfield maestro wasn’t his usual self tonight as he misplaced a few passes. He was subbed off for Roberto Pereyra in the second half. His substitution leads many to wonder if things would have gone differently in the penalty shootout had he been on the field.

Paul Pogba (7.0): The midfield sensation was his side’s best midfielder on the night. Sprung into action in the second half of extra time beautifully setting up Carlos Tevez for the go-ahead goal with his lovely dribble.

Arturo Vidal (5.5): At fault for Napoli’s first goal as he nonchalantly turned the ball over in the second half with his back heel. Probably should have scored late into extra time but saw his effort cleared off the line by Koulibaly.

Carlos Tevez (7.5): What more is there to say on El Apache? The former Manchester City man clearly came to play when it mattered most netting both his team’s goals. His missed penalty shot stained an otherwise top performance.

Fernando Llorente (6.5): Such an underrated piece of this team, the Spaniard’s link up play gifted many of his teammates plenty of opportunities to score. All that was missing tonight from Llorente, was the goal.

Simone Padoin (5.5): The former Atalanta man came on for Lichtsteiner and put in a good shift. Missed the crucial penalty that condemned his side to defeat.

Roberto Pereyra (5.5): The Juventus midfielder cannot seem to score no matter the situation he’s presented with. Like Padoin, he missed a crucial penalty that could have gifted his side the win.

Alvaro Morata (6.0): Didn’t do much when he came on for Llorente late in the game. Can’t be faulted for his contribution as he slotted home his penalty shot.

Rafa Benitez (6.5): The former Liverpool boss was rewarded for his decision to start both Jonathan De Guzman and Marek Hamsik. As usual, Benitez gets his tactics right in a final.

Rafael Cabral (7.0): The penalty shootout hero, Rafael, made a few crucial penalty shot saves on Simone Padoin and Giorgio Chiellini to keep his side in the game. Will be please with his contribution on the night.

Christian Maggio (6.0): The Napoli full back got forward nicely today but was left exposed on many occasions by Juventus’ Patrice Evra. The veteran full back, however, did whip in a few nice crosses for his teammates.

Raul Albiol (5.5): The Spaniard did not have his best game today clashing heads with his center back partner early in the first half gifting Juventus forward Carlos Tevez his first goal. An unforgettable match for the former Real Madrid man.

Kalidou Koulibaly (6.5): A night filled with mixed emotions for the French defender. Started off the game on the wrong foot today giving Tevez an early Christmas present for the first goal. However, he did redeem himself in extra time with a goal line clearance and the game winning penalty shot.

Faouzi Ghoulam (6.0): The Algerian did not look like he was at his best tonight. He got skinned for pace numerous times by Stephan Lichtsteiner. His delivery was also off tonight.

David Lopez (6.0): The combative midfielder did well tonight but one would have to question his positioning throughout the game. Juventus found plenty of gaps in front of their defense.

Walter Gargano (6.0): Much like his teammate, his positioning will have to be questioned. The Uruguayan did not provide his teammates with enough cover throughout the game.

Jose Callejon (5.5): The former Real Madrid man looked lively over the course of the game but will be kicking himself for not putting away his golden chance with his side down 1-0. Missed an important penalty shot to top off his performance.

Jonathan De Guzman (7.0): The attacking midfielder put in a great performance today at the heart of his side’s attack. Did really well to burn Roberto Pereyra and filter in an inch perfect cross to Gonzalo Higuain for his side’s first goal.

Marek Hamsik (7.0): Deployed out of position on the left hand side of Napoli’s offense, the Slovakian did not look out of place one bit. He was perhaps his side’s most dangerous player on the night and could have easily scored.

Gonzalo Higuain (7.5): The Argentine forward was not to be outdone by his counterpart Carlos Tevez and netted two huge goals for Napoli, sending the game into extra time and consequently into shootouts. Big game from a big player.

Jorginho (5.5): Was brought on mainly for his penalty taking ability and funnily enough he saw his effort saved by Gianlugi Buffon.

Dries Mertens (6.0): The Belgian was brought on in the second half in order to provide his team with a spark but Mertens failed to do so. Took his penalty shot late into the rounds but missed it.

Gokhan Inler (5.5): The Swiss midfielder was brought on as added cover for his side but he failed in that respect. Did not do enough to stop Pogba from setting up Carlos Tevez for his second goal.
