It’s been a Topsy-Turvy start to the season for Roma, but what can they do in the January transfer window?
Roma have had one of the most bizarre seasons so far in almost all of Europe. In the beginning, they seemed Serie A favorites, slipped a bit in late September but then lived up to those expectations by taking up 1st place by week 10.
Now week 17, Roma are 5th, 4 points back of 1st with coach Rudi Garcia on the hot seat.
In the Champions League Roma somehow managed to get out of their group with just 6 points, the lowest in the whole tournament for teams who went on. Expect Roma to be busy on the market as January will give Walter Sabatini some time to fix certain holes that stop Roma from becoming Scudetto worthy.
WHOS COMING IN?
This team lacks depth and options in the defence. Roma for the most part have had a free flowing attack but a very shaky defense. Sabatini will look to bring in guys to help improve in that area.
For the right back position it’s just been reported that Debuchy of Arsenal and former Lille player under Rudi Garcia has just become an option. About a month ago reports of Bruno Peres in January were hot, but those cooled down and it seems unlikely.
For center back we’ve heard many names, Juan Jesus, Sakho and Lorenzo Tonelli are some with Juan Jesus looking like a serious option because he can be put into a deal for Ljajic.
At left back Roma will look at Bosnian Kolasinac with his alternative being Barcelona’s Adriano, who can also play right back. In attack Roma will look to replace Juan Manuel Iturbe and the names are Diego Perotti, Jermaine Lens, Alessio Cerci & Stephen El Shaarawy.
The favorite as we speak is Diego Perotti and there has been ongoing contact and meetings between Roma and Genoa for the player. In the latest hours though El Shaarawy has become a serious option because Sabatini likes him, he wants to return to Italy. He can play all the attacking roles in Garcia’s 4-3-3 formation and he can arrive on loan. Di Marzio reported that contact between Sabatini & Monaco have started.
Roma will look at this January transfer market to also offload some ‘dead meat’. Roma are looking to sell Torosidis who has drawn interest from Torino and Genoa. Him being in a deal for Perotti is very possible like i mentioned earlier.
Next is Ashley Cole. Yes he is still a Roma player.. After not wanting to terminate his contract in the summer Roma were forced to keep him. But they have done nothing with him. All he does is train with the team at Trigoria and gets paid. What a life, eh? Anyways, Roma don’t want Cole anymore and he’s drawing interest from teams in the MLS, the big one is from the LA Galaxy.
It has been reported that Real Madrid are strongly interested in Miralem Pjanic but their interest looks to be shut down because it’s been reported that James Pallotta doesn’t want to sell his Little Prince.
In the attack the only sell Roma will make is Juan Iturbe, who’s move to Bournemouth is virtually official. Iturbe will move to the English club on loan for €2m with an option to buy at €22m. Some reports state that the option to buy becomes mandatory after a certain amount of games played.
If Bournemouth use the option to buy, Roma will actually make profit on Iturbe, which would be pretty amazing considering how much he flopped in Rome. Lastly, Roma still own Seydou Doumbia, so expect Roma to do something with him as they might look to sell him permanently away from the club.
