Roma Director of Football Monchi believes that Roma have a slight advantage over Barcelona.
Monchi made it clear that Roma being drawn with Barcelona in today’s Champions League Quarter-Finals draw was unfortunate as the Blaugrana are unbeaten in La Liga and the Champions League this season. Despite this, Monchi is confident that La Magica can beat Barcelona.
Speaking with Premium Sport after the draw was announced Monchi acknowledged the strength of Barcelona.
“We weren’t very lucky, but we want to play this tie. I have faith in my team, we have to go out with the desire of doing something important. We know that Barcelona are one of the best teams in the world, but we must think we can move forward.
“In football, you play 11 against 11. If we do things properly, we can move forward. Barca aren’t just Messi, they’re a very good team, but Roma can still beat them”.
Monchi insisted that Barcelona are stronger this season than in previous years and he praised the current Manager at the Camp Nou, Ernesto Valverde, for the work he has done since taking over from Luis Enrique in May 2017.
“Valverde’s Barcelona is more balanced, they’ve improved a lot defensively and they’ve grown a lot”.
Giallorossi Goalkeeper, Alisson, has started to make a name for himself across Europe this season as his performances in between the sticks for Roma haven’t gone unnoticed. Monchi commented on the strength of Alisson for La Magica.
“Do Spain fear Monchi and Alisson? Maybe, because I know Barcelona well, but I’m sure Alisson will give even more”.
Monchi mentioned that Roma have an advantage over Barcelona as the second-leg will be played at Stadio Olimpico, the home stadium of La Lupa.
“I really like the fact the return will be played at the Olimpico, if we leave Camp Nou with a good result, we can have a good game with our fans behind us”.
