DEFENDERS: Giuseppe Biava of Lazio wants to see out his career in Bergamo where he was born after being released by Lazio. The deal should be made official in mid-July. Despite his considerable age (37) he has produced regular and consistent performances for Lazio this season and will hopefully provide a steady hand in the nerazzurro back line.
After 72 appearances for Bologna, Nicolo Cherubin has jumped ship at the prospect of relegation. It’s now official – he will be Atalanta’s first defensive signing, on a two-year loan with buy-out clause.
Current bergamasco protegé Gabriel Silva is being fought over by Roma and Inter; however, the giallorossi all but put Inter out of the race by offering Dodo on loan. Atalanta have received an official request and respective presidents Sabatini and Giaretta are to meet soon to discuss the youngster’s future.
Alberto Almici has impressed on loan in smaller leagues and now Atalanta are receiving a lot of attention for 21 year-old player from Serie B teams Latina, Lanciano and Ternana.
MIDFIELDERS: Atalanta have bought out Luca Cigarini who was half-owned by Napoli although he has already spent three seasons in Bergamo. Sassuolo are pressing to sign the 28 year-old but Atalanta won’t budge – he’s part of their plans.
Carlos Carmona is bent on leaving the midfield but doesn’t know where he wants to go. Personally he is keen on a move to Spain and has held talks with Sevilla. However, Metalist Kharkiv are offering a lucrative contract to bring the Chilean to Ukraine. Atalanta is reluctant; Carmona is adamant; the asking price is €10m.
Giacomo Bonaventura is Fiorentina’s first choice to replace €30m+ rated Juan Cuadrado. If the Colombian goes to Barcelona, Manchester United or Roma, money would be no obstacle for the viola to sign Bonaventura who may cost around €10m. Atalanta is also asking for a youth player as counterweight such as Marko Bakic, the 21 year-old defender.
Daniele Baselli is another of the Lombardians’ young talents and once again, he may not be around for long; many of the league’s heavyweights are after his signature. The €12m price tag put off Juventus and Fiorentina but Milan are still hot on the 21 year-old’s tail, who has been dubbed “the new Pirlo”.
ATTACKERS: Marco D’Alessandro has been confirmed as an official signing on loan from Roma. The talented youngster proved a lynchpin for Cesena’s promotion campaign on loan from the capital; flexible, can play wing-back or wing-forward.
Cyril Théreau of Chievo Verona was on the verge of a three-year contract with Atalanta – Udinese sneaked into the talks and snapped him up with a 700 000 p/a deal as opposed to the 550 000 offered by At
German Denis might be joining Bonaventura in a trip to Florence. A proven goalscorer (13 this season), the Argentine striker may be needed in Fiorentina to cover Mario Gomez and Giuseppe Rossi; the club struggled last season with injuries to their star strikers and the six-month loan of Alessandro Matri did little to boost their fortunes.
GOALKEEPERS: Simone Colombi was an academy keeper sent on loan to various lower-division sides but has now been offered his Serie A debut by Cagliari, who have officially bought the player’s rights.
Fun Fact: Atalanta’s nickname (apart from their colours, the nerazzurri) is La Dea – the Goddess – because the founder named his club after a beautiful Greek nymph. The woman on the badge is a representation of that goddess.
