Roma sports director Walter Sabatini has met defender Mehdi Benatia’s agent in Milan today. The meeting was decisive in order to clarify Benatia’s future with little more than ten days left to the end of the transfer window. Throughout all the summer, the defender has been the object of the interest of many European top clubs. On the other hand, the Moroccan has never officially denied claims that he was on the verge of leaving the club.
Therefore, Sabatini met Benatia’s agent Moussa Sissoko in Milan today to discuss a new contract and finally dismiss all the rumors. Sabatini proposed a new deal, which will allow Benatia to earn up to € 2,5 million between the basic contract and bonuses. This new agreement also involves a potential buyout clause for the player.
Roma is trying this way to close the door to all of the potential buyers: Manchester United and Chelsea in England and Bayern Munich in Germany. Guardiola’s club’s interest has become particularly strong after defender Javi Martinez suffered a serious injury in the German Super Cup. Yesterday, Guardiola said: “it’d be great to add a new player to the team at this point of the transfer window”, while Bayern’s director Karl Heinz Rummenigge said: “I don’t want to talk about Benatia, or his price is going to rise”.
