Napoli beat Cagliari 5-0 at the Stadio Sant’Elia on Sunday afternoon, led by Dries Mertens’ hat-trick.
Napoli Manager Maurizio Sarri spoke to Sky after the match. Sarri said that he was happy with the way his team played after their UEFA Champions League game against Benfica.
“The game was difficult because we came from our Champions League commitment, which always takes great physical and mental energy. It was also difficult because of the start time [12:30]; it’s truly difficult to play football [at that time] and I don’t wish it on anyone. It was hard because Cagliari has always done well at home. However, we played a great match, also showing great sacrifice defensively. The work of our attackers off the ball makes all the difference for us. Now, we focus on playing the same way in the next mach against Torino, who is doing very well.”
Napoli defender, Kalidou Koulibaly came off the field in the 42nd minute after he picked up an injury. Sarri said they will wait to see the extent of the injury.
“He took a blow to the knee. The initial feeling is that it’s nothing serious, but we will wait until tomorrow for a definite answer.”
Sarri also spoke about Mertens and his performance and his versatility.
“Mertens is a strong player. He can make all the difference from the wing and can do just as well as the central striker. At this time, more than just his role, you have to talk about physical and mental of the player. Moving him ten meters [from winger to striker] will not change him.”
Sarri will look to lead the partenopei to a positive result against Torino at the Stadio San Paolo next Sunday, Dec. 18.
