What could have caused a team that seemed opposed to Tavecchio to suddenly side with on election day? Some other so-called ‘undecided’ teams such as Atalanta, Sampdoria and Hellas Verona did not side with either candidate, but on the day when it seemed that the ex director of Lega Serie D would become Chairman, they cast their vote in favour of him, for their own oppurtunistic interests. However Cesena’s case is more unique.
Just one week ago Cesena stated that they would not be siding with Tavecchio, however following some happenings on the transfer market, they changed sides.
When Cesena were unable to sign Reto Ziegler from Juve and Marco Borriello refused to go to Cesena from Roma, other teams intervened, in this case Lazio. Lotito was willing to assist the team from Emilia granted of course they cast their vote for Tavecchio, essentially a ‘present’ for choosing the ‘right’ side. Through this Lotito would purchase Leonardo Pavoletti from Sassuolo for €3 mln and then send him on loan to Cesena. This transaction was also supported by another Tavecchio supporter, Enrico Preziosi, Genoa’s president and owner.
In the past hours, Pavoletti has been approached by Torino. Seemingly more to run interference than actually interested in the player. It’s only a coincidence that Cairo, Torino’s owner was a supporter of Demetrio Albertini, but this just goes to show that in football politics, the transfer market is always at the center of attention.
