Sime Vrsaljko will not play another match for Genoa. Instead, fresh from the World Cup, the right-back will join Milan next season, according to La Gazzetta.
Heading in the opposite direction is Alessandro Matri, Serie A’s serial flop, on loan. Matri will replace the outgoing Alberto Gilardino.
Vrsaljko has been eyed up by bigger clubs for over a year; now, after his performances for Croatia in Brazil, Milan have finally snapped up the 22 year-old.
Across the season Vrsaljko put in more of a defensive shift than offensive, creating only 10 chances (among which one assist) but making 86 clearances in his 22 appearances.
He also holds the record for fitting the most consonants possible into an eight-letter surname in modern football. Now that’s worth a transfer.
Meanwhile Ignazio Abate might be looking over his shoulder with worry on his face as the out-of-favour Italian has now got serious competition for his right-back spot.
