Zenit and Belgium’s Axel Witsel has said that his future no longer lies in Russia.
The Belgian has spent the last 4 seasons in the Russian Premier League, but now he sees that it’s time to make a move to a serious, Champions League caliber side in either England or Italy. Zenit was signed from Benfica in 2012 for €40 million.
“I want to try a new experience in another league, a new challenge. I hope to play in a higher level competition for a great European club – he said speaking at Belgium’s press conference. The rumors on Milan, Roma, Chelsea or Tottenham? My future could be in either Italy or England. I don’t care really if I go to Serie A or the Premier League, just as long as it’s for a great club.”
No longer a young prospect, the now 27 year old understands that it’s now time to perform on a bigger stage.
Witsel has been capped 67 times for the senior Belgian side, scoring 6 goals in that time frame.
